Danielle Smith at Aikido of Monterey

California Aikido Association

Aikido of Monterey is a member of California Aikido Association (CAA), division II, headed by Frank Doran Shihan (7th Dan) whose primary dojo, Aikido West, is located in Redwood City. Doran Sensei is also the direct teacher of Danielle Smith Sensei and Dennis Evans Sensei.

The Aikido of Northern California Yudansha Kai was organized in 1974 by black belt holders dedicated to the task of exploring the path shown by Master Ueshiba, and to teaching Aikido philosophy and techniques to all those who wished to follow.

In 1980, the name of the Yudansha Kai was changed to Aikido Association of Northern California (AANC) to take into consideration the many people represented by the association who are not black belt holders. In 1991, the AANC voted to reorganize into three divisions, each under the guidance of a sixth degree black belt.

February 2002 saw the reformation of this organization, which adopted the new name of  California Aikido Association (CAA).

Aikikai Foundation

The California Aikido Association maintains affiliation with Hombu Dojo, Aikido Headquarters, in Tokyo, Japan. Upon O Sensei's passing, April 26, 1969, his son, Kisshomaru Ueshiba, became "Nidai Doshu" the second head of Aikido. Upon his death in January 2000, his son, the grandson of O Sensei, Moriteru Ueshiba, inherited the responsibility and is "Sandai Doshu", the third head of Aikido. Log onto the CAA web site for more information.
